One of the pioneers of Australian streaming will leave the local market this week and mark the end of the first era in the exaggerated sports transmission revolution.
Optus Sport stands almost nine years after the start in Australia near his suite of rights, including the jewel -the -the -the -the -the -the -the -the -the Premier League. The exit will be the largest departure of the sector for a decades of right-wing grave, since fans had no choice but to record two or more Pay TV platforms to follow their favorite sports.

Stan-in possession of Nine Entertainment actual today the only local sports subscription streaming player in Australia, after the Saudi Arabia-from Dazn, based in Great Britain, was supported by Saudi Arabia at the beginning of this year. Stan was founded in 2015, initially as a joint venture between nine and fairfax media. After a first focus on entertainment, the expected takeover of Optus’ right is concentrated for an expected sum of around 300 million US dollars as the Stan Sport brand as Clear No. 2 and a large challenger for Foxtel/Kayo Sports, which holds the rights to AFL and NRL.
The Stan deal will be announced in the coming days, but it was as usual for Optus Sport. Telecommunications promotes the euro tournament of the UEFA women’s Euro 2025, which begins at the beginning of July. An optus spokesman said “All companies regularly check their companies to ensure that they maximize the value and recognize their full potential – optus is no different. We do not comment on speculation.”
Optus Sport was dealt with in 2016 as an early sports streaming specialist, part of the so-called distribution model in the Netflix style, the traditional cable or satellite-based provider and instead dealt with the ordinary internet connections of customers to provide content.

Sports right advisor Jon Marquard, who was involved in Australia in Australia until about 18 months ago with optus sports, said the strategy had worked for a while, but the company has shifted the focus in recent years.
“This period from 2019 to 2023, which culminated in the Women’s World Championship, added around 1 billion to Optus when it had imagined other challenges, including the great failure and the cyber incident,” he said.
“It was undoubtedly a good thing in the first six years, but writing has been on the wall compared to other streamers for some time because globalization occurred and new players came onto the market, and Optus could not keep up.”
Amazon – Via his ICC Cricket – and Disney – about this year’s introduction of ESPN in his Disney+ service – are now known on the Australian market, while other online subscription players such as Netflix and Apple have acquired rights in overseas.

Although Optus’ football offer was extensive, including the Super League of women in England, J.League and international competitions, it could not become an outstanding goal for fans of sport. Paramount+ screens of Matildas, Socceroos and A League football and Stan Sport have rights to the European Champions League.
“It is recognition of nine to continue and increase the scale,” said Marquard. “To invest in Germany and in the World Championships in Rugby and now increase your football portfolio, you need that.”
Stan will broadcast Wimbledon, the British & Irish Lions Tour and the Pay-Per-View boxing between Paul Gallen and Sonny Billy Williams in the coming weeks and underline its growing presence over several sports.
However, Marquard suggested that a more convincing sports offer Stan gives the opportunity to increase the number of his customers who subscribe to more than just his entertainment package. The basic package of Stan costs 12 US dollars a month, while Stan Sport, which was introduced in 2020, is an additional 15 US dollars. The battle of the Gallen-Williams costs $ 70. Stan has reported 2.3 million subscribers, but only a fraction of those who also pay for sport.

“As a result of this acquisition, I would expect you to look at your product range again to see how you can put your sports package into a larger part of your customer base,” said Marquard.
The exit from Optus Sport, which has the rights of the Premier League by 2028, means a subscription less for football fans -and saves 10 US dollars per month for optus customers or 25 US dollars for others. However, the picture became complicated by Kayo’s resumption in sport. The FIFA Club World Club is currently being shown on the most popular Sport Streaming platform in Australia as the direct result of DAZN’s US dollar deal with FIFA.
The DAZN acquisition is likely to trigger more changes for the local market. Around 100 Foxtel employees were released in April, and Kayo increased his monthly pricing by 5 US dollars this month. The standard package now costs 30 US dollars.
The NRL rights of 2028 are currently being negotiated. Stans commitment to the expansion of his portfolio together with his place in the stable of the current NRL free-to-air partner Nine means a partnership with another PAY TV provider and the current proportion with Foxtel/Kayo-Wenig makes sense.

But Dazn, supported by the Saudi Arabia’s public investment funds, has deep pockets. It paid $ 3.4 billion for the acquisition of Foxtel and its 4.7 million subscribers in Australia. While all games are available on Kayo, both live and as repetitions on demand, the tournament is also available on the DAZN platform, which is still available to Australian customers. There, live games in harmony with its overseas approach are free, but repetitions, higher -quality video and sound, and fewer ads are available for subscribers for $ 30 per month or $ 15 for annual engagement.
While the legislators still see free air television as the primary type of Australian to see sport-and ensure that its most important events are protected under anti-siphoning law-the cable will soon restrict and switch to internet-supplied smart TVs and mobile devices to challenge this legacy dynamics. The latest investment of seven and nine in their own advertising-supported online platforms suggests what they know what’s coming. But for the time being, the optus output allows the Sport -Streaming race to be finely balanced.
